Newcastle United dominated possession with 60% and created 21 chances, but they couldn’t break through the opposition defense. This marked the first time Eddie Howe’s side failed to score at St James’ Park since their goalless draw against Leicester City in May 2023, the night they secured Champions League qualification.
A first-half strike from Danny Welbeck handed Newcastle just their second home defeat of 2024, the last being a 3-2 loss to Manchester City in January.
The result extends Newcastle’s winless streak in the Premier League to four matches, with the team now going six hours and 45 minutes without scoring from open play across all competitions.
Reacting to the loss, Alan Shearer expressed his frustration, saying, “Newcastle very, very poor in front of goal again [angry emoji].”
Despite the return of Alexander Isak, who was sidelined for three games with a broken toe, and Anthony Gordon providing promising chances, the Magpies struggled to find the net. They also remain without striker Callum Wilson, who is expected to return for next Sunday’s match against Chelsea.
