Danny Welbeck was able to travel home with his Brighton teammates after being stretchered off during their Premier League victory over Newcastle United on Saturday.
Welbeck netted the decisive first-half goal at St James’ Park, marking his fifth Premier League goal of the season. However, the 33-year-old forward had to leave the match in the 81st minute after suffering a blow to his lower back during an aerial challenge with Newcastle defender Fabian Schär.
Medical staff immediately attended to Welbeck, providing oxygen before he was stretchered off.
After the match, Brighton head coach Fabian Hürzeler shared that Welbeck had been taken to the hospital for scans to assess the extent of the injury. “I can’t give a full update yet,” Hürzeler said. “He will undergo a scan, and we’ll know more soon. It looks like he took a knee to the back from an opponent. Hopefully, it’s nothing serious, but we’ll need to wait for confirmation.”
Welbeck was later cleared to travel and joined his teammates on their flight home, with Brighton’s social media sharing a reassuring update. The club posted a picture of Welbeck on the plane, writing: “Dat guy’s a bit bruised and battered, but the good news is our match-winner at St James’ Park, Danny Welbeck, is flying home with us.”
They also thanked fans for giving Welbeck a warm ovation as he was stretchered off the pitch.
Brighton’s next match is at home against Wolves in the Premier League next Saturday.
